Volunteer

We can't do it without you.

Volunteers are crucial to the success of Cat Care Durango, providing invaluable support to our daily operations and care for cats while engaging the community.  Without the help of our volunteers, we couldn’t have the impact that we do.  We are so grateful for every single person who has helped and those who continue to help.

Available volunteer roles:

  • Feeding, scooping litter and socializing cats

  • Surface cleaning and deep cleaning

  • Professional skilled work, from marketing to fundraising or event planning support

  • Help at events

  • Help raise awareness of our organization by word of mouth, being feet on the street

All that we require is:

  • In house cat handling and behavior training by one of our staff

  • Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older

  • All volunteers must sign a release waiver of responsibility

Fostering

Join Our Cat Care Team: Become a Foster Caregiver!

Are you ready to make a difference in the lives of cats and kittens in need? Cat Care Durango is continuously seeking compassionate individuals to join our foster program. Whether you’re looking for a short-term commitment or have the ability to foster long-term, we can use your help!

Adult Cats

We have an ongoing need for foster caregivers to work with adult cats who:

  • Are under-socialized or shy and need gentle care to build trust.

  • Require a break from the rescue environment.

  • Have special dietary needs or medical conditions that improve with one-on-one attention.

Fostering an adult cat is incredibly rewarding and can be either a short-term or long-term commitment depending on your availability.

Seasonal Cats

During kitten season, we need fosters who can care for:

  • Nursing mothers with their litters.

  • Orphaned kittens, some of whom may require bottle feeding (training is provided!).

Fostering kittens typically lasts 1–6 weeks and is a lifesaving role for these tiny fur-babies.

Why Foster?

  • Save lives and make a direct impact.

  • Receive training, resources, and support from our team.

  • Experience the joy of helping cats and kittens thrive in a loving environment.

Fostering Caregivers Must Meet the Following Requirements:

  • Fosters must be over 18 years of age.

  • Both homeowners and renters are eligible to foster. Permission from a landlord will be required for renters. NOTE: ALL fosters must be within capacity limits for the county in which they reside.

    • The residence should have sufficient space to provide a separate "safe space" where a foster cat(s) can stay for the first 10 days (quarantine period) while adjusting to a temporary home. This space must be away from your current pets in case your foster cat becomes sick or stressed.

    • A home inspection will be completed prior to application approval.

  • Resident pets are permitted and can have a positive influence on a foster animal.  Resident pets MUST be up to date on vaccines, spayed/neutered and in good health. They must also have a temperament that allows for a positive and calm foster environment.

  • Fosters must be willing to handle potential behavioral issues and basic medical needs with CCD support & guidance.

    • Fosters should be open and willing to address fractious behavior or any adjustment problems that may arise.

    • Fosters must be comfortable giving oral medication, as required.

  • Foster must be willing to accept the risk of zoonotic (transmissible to human) diseases and disease transmission to other pets.

  • Foster must ensure that foster cat(s) stay indoors. Foster cats will not be declawed.

  • All members of a household must agree to foster a cat.

  • In the event of a "foster fail" caregivers must be willing to go through the standard adoption process at the shelter or return the cat for other adopters.

Your Foster Commitment:

As a Cat Care Durango Foster, you promise to:

  • Provide a safe, clean, comfortable environment for your foster cat(s).

  • Spend time with your foster cat(s) ensuring physical, emotional and play needs are met.

  • Update CCD regularly on the health and growth of the cat(s) in your care and bring questions/concerns to the CCD team in a timely fashion.

  • Attend vaccine and checkup appointments if necessary.

  • Follow guidance to integrate the fosters with your animals and other members of your household.

  • Return the foster cat(s) back to the cattery when cleared for adoption, and/or work with potential adopters to meet the cat(s) in your home.

  • Obtain written consent of CCD to have another caregiver attend to the needs of a foster cat(s).

What we provide:

  • Cat Care Durango provides litter and food, including prescription food.  We also cover the costs of medications and veterinary care performed while in foster.

  • All veterinary care and details are discussed during the foster interview and will be provided at the time of a foster agreement.

  • Every adult cat has been examined, tested for FIV & FeLV and received vaccinations prior to being sent to a foster home. Kittens will undergo the same tests and vaccinations once they are old enough. ALL cats/kittens are spayed/neutered as soon as possible.

  • Foster care may be short term or last until an adoptive home is found. And foster cat(s) may be returned to the shelter at any time if circumstances change.
