So You’re Ready to Adopt?

Adoptions are crucial to Cat Care Durango’s mission, so placing cats and kittens into loving and committed homes ensures they have the chance to live happy, healthy lives while opening space for us to rescue and care for more animals in need.

What you need to know about adopting from Cat Care Durango

Until you have completed an adoption application and have been approved for adoption, our staff will not discuss adoption details regarding any particular cat with you.

It may take 24-48 hours for your application to be processed, please be patient with us!

You must be 21 years of age or older to be approved for adoption.  Please be ready to provide a government issued picture Id.

You must provide proof of address as well as your lease (if you rent), with pet policy included, and the phone number of your landlord.

We support adopting kittens in pairs and offer a discount to encourage doing so.

Our Adoption Fee

What our adoption fee covers:

  • One cat/kitten:  $125

  • Two cats/kittens:  $225

All of our cats receive comprehensive care before adoption, including deworming, FIV/FeLV testing, spaying or neutering, microchipping, and being brought up-to-date on all vaccinations. In addition, they are showered with love and special attention to prepare them for their forever homes.

While our adoption fee helps offset costs, it only covers a small portion of the care provided to our cats and kittens during their time with us.

Most of the cats in our care reside at our cattery, and they can’t wait to meet you! We highly encourage you to visit and spend time with any kitty you’re considering adopting. No appointment is necessary during our open hours, so feel free to stop by.

To avoid delays in the adoption process, please complete an adoption application as soon as possible. We look forward to helping you find your perfect feline companion!

Our Adoption Process

Review Process

Once we receive your application, our team will review it carefully. If we have any questions or need further clarification, we will contact you directly. Please allow 24–48 hours for this process, and thank you for your patience!

If your application is approved, we will notify you via email or phone.

If your application is not approved, you will be informed in the same way.

Please note: We reserve the right to deny any adoption application at our discretion.

Approval Notification

Once your application is approved, the exciting part begins—the search for your perfect feline companion!

  • If you already have a cat in mind, we’ll help facilitate the adoption process for that specific pet.

  • If you need assistance selecting a cat, our knowledgeable staff will evaluate the cats in our care and recommend ones that might be a great fit for you and your family.

Finding Your Pet

Our team spends significant time with the cats in our cattery and has a deep understanding of their personalities and behaviors. We prioritize matching cats with loving homes to ensure the best fit for both you and the pet.

Before finalizing an adoption, we will disclose any medical issues or special needs the cat may have.

Please note: We reserve the right to decline an adoption if we believe it may not be in the best interest of the cat or your household.

Once you’ve chosen your new furry friend, the final steps include:

1. Completing the adoption agreement.

2. Transferring the cat’s medical records to you.

Congratulations on your new family member! Thank you for choosing adoption and giving a cat a second chance at a loving home.

Finalizing the Adoption

Meet Our Sanctuary Cats

At Cat Care Durango, our mission is to protect the welfare and dignity of all cats at every stage of their lives. While every cat in our care is available for adoption, some may be overlooked by potential adopters due to medical conditions or terminal illnesses requiring ongoing or lifelong care. These special felines, whom we lovingly call our “Sanctuary Cats,” have a permanent place with us, where they will receive the love, comfort, and medical attention they deserve for the rest of their lives.

  • ALICE

Alice and Mitzi  are a bonded pair that joined us several years ago through a TNR program and have been inseparable ever since. Most cats who are caught during a TNR are re-released, however due to Alice's very long and light colored coat, our founder decided it wouldn't be safe to re-release her into the wild.  While both are naturally shy around unfamiliar faces, Alice has made remarkable progress. She’s grown much more comfortable with strangers and now enjoys being petted by many visitors. During her time at Cat Care, Alice has truly blossomed, learning to embrace her lovable side and becoming a cherished favorite.  She is also often considered one of the most beautiful cats in our cattery (and she knows it!).

  • BRIDGET

Bridget joined us in the summer of 2023 all the way from Texas and has quickly become one of our spunky Sanctuary favorites. She was diagnosed with a rare condition called pyogranulomatous inflammation, a chronic issue that can affect various parts of the body, including the skin, lymph nodes, and eyes. This condition is caused by a buildup of white blood cells like macrophages and neutrophils.

In the summer of 2024, Bridget began a year-long treatment to remove the fungal infections associated with her condition, and so far, it has been a success. Despite her medical challenges, Bridget remains one of the most endearing (and mischievous!) personalities in our facility—a bratty sweetheart who always keeps us on our toes.

  • BUDDHA

Buddha joined us in 2023 when we first opened our facility, coming to us from the La Plata Humane Society. Having been diagnosed with kidney disease, she is a member of our Hospice care group and receives extra attention to ensure her days are as comfortable and joyful as possible.  While she’s not the cuddliest of cats, she has her own special way of showing affection—every morning, she eagerly asks for a shoulder ride as soon as we walk through the doors.

  • CALLIE

Callie was brought to us with 3 other cats, Big Boy Russia (aka Rush), Zoey and Chloe. Her owner had to move into an assisted living facility and Cat Care accepted all 4 as owner surrenders. Zoey and Chloe were adopted shortly after their arrival but unfortunately Callie and Rush haven't found their new homes. Callie will most likely spend her last days here with us as she is a member of our Hospice care group, she has kidney failure and receives fluids and extra care while she is with us.

  • IN MEMORY of CAROLINE 🤍

Our Sweet Caroline (and Hip Hop) came into Cat Care after the veterinarian office they "worked" at, closed its doors. Our founder didn't want to see her or Hip Hop to end up at the Humane Society so she took them into the cattery. Caroline was called our "Wal-Mart Greeter" at times, she was usually one of the first cats you met when touring our facility.

  • CHUBBY

Chubby is a beloved figure here at Cat Care, recognized for his striking tuxedo markings and laid-back personality. At around 15 years old, Chubby requires twice-daily insulin injections to manage his diabetes. Like all of our Sanctuary kitties, Chubby is available for adoption, but his care comes with added responsibilities. Adopters should be prepared to meet his medical needs, provide a specialized diet, and closely monitor his health.

  • HIP HOP

Hip Hop truly lives up to her name, gracefully hopping around the cattery on her 2 ½ legs. She arrived with Caroline a few years ago from Home Sweet Home, where they served as beloved office cats. Born with underdeveloped legs, Hip Hop hasn’t let that slow her down—she’s actually one of the fastest cats in our care!  She is also one of our more shy kitties, but with some treats for confidence she usually warms up pretty quickly to newcomers.

  • MAI MAI

Petite Mai Mai adores soaking up sun puddles, engaging in playful moments, and spending time with her fellow senior friends. She joined us from the Humane Society in the winter of 2022. Though she’s our tiniest senior kitty, Mai Mai has one of the biggest, most youthful hearts. Start a game with her, and you’ll quickly see her inner kitten shine!

  • MITZI

Alice and Mitzi came to us years ago through a TNR program and have been inseparable ever since. Mitzi is still working on building her trust with humans, allowing only a select few to interact with her. If you’ve visited our facility, you’ve likely noticed how stunning she is and showing off her polydactyl paws!

  • OWL

Owl earned her name from her habit of always perching up high. A transfer from the Humane Society, she holds the title of our second-oldest resident. Owl is a favorite among regular visitors and has a knack for deciding who’s worth her time—if she thinks you’re cool, she’ll happily come down to say hello!  Owl is another one in our Hospice care group, she has been diagnosed with kidney disease and receives fluids and special care.

  • RUSH

Rush (formerly known as Big Boy Russia) arrived with Callie, Zoey, and Chloe. Though he’s initially shy, Rush has a gentle soul and warms up at his own pace. He thrives in calm, quiet environments, making him an ideal companion for someone seeking an older, low-maintenance cat. Rush was placed in our Sanctuary Cats program due to the high anxiety he’s developed in our bustling cattery, though we haven’t identified any medical issues so far.  Rush would be best suited as the only cat in someone's household.

  • SKITTLES

Meet Skittles, an 18-year-old long-haired black gentleman brimming with wisdom and charm. After his owner’s passing, he journeyed all the way from Florida to join us. Skittles holds the honor of being the very first kitty Cat Care welcomed into our facility. With his calm and composed demeanor, he serves as a wonderful role model for other cats. Skittles is a shining example of the beauty, grace, and resilience of senior cats.
